The first settlers arrived in the region that is now the city of Taunton in 1639. On the banks of the Two Mile (Forge) River near Taunton, iron ore was discovered in 1652. A partnership of 23 people was established to launch the ironworks following the discovery of iron ore. Sometime between 1652 and 1656 saw the start of the iron works. The iron works’ location in the east end of Taunton led to the creation of the Town of Raynham.

On April 2, 1731, Raynham was constituted as a town. Williams, Gilmore, Andrews, Hathaway, White, Dean, Hall, Gushee, Jones, Washburn, King, Shaw, and Gushee.

Before they could separate from Taunton, town authorities from the first families divided the Massachusetts General Court three times. "That the inhabitants of said town do, within the space of three years from the publication of this act, procure and settle a learned and orthodox minister of good conversation, and make provisions for his comfortable and honorable support, and also provide a schoolmaster to instruct their children in reading and writing," the Court stipulated as a condition for Raynham’s takeover of Taunton.

Elizabeth Pole, the first woman to ever found a town in America, first established Raynham in 1639 as a section of Taunton. James and Henry Leonard, who founded Taunton Iron Works, one of the first ironworks in America, discovered bog iron along the Forge River in 1652. Current-day Raynham was named after a place in Norfolk, England, and split off from Taunton.
